There is only one company authorized by the Federal Trade Commission to process free credit report orders.

Individuals are entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. AnnualCreditReport.com processes orders for all three services at once. They are the only company approved by the FTC to assist consumers in obtaining their free credit reports.

Why Other "Credit Scores Free!" Websites Should Be Avoided

Many websites offer free credit reporting services, but most require that consumers purchase a product in order to access their free credit report. The Fair Credit Reporting Act stipulates that each of the three major credit reporting agencies must provide a free credit report annually, at the consumer's request. Websites that require the purchase of other products are taking advantage of consumers who do not know their rights.

The authorized website, AnnualCreditReport.com, does not contact consumers by email marketing, telephone or regular mail. However, many phishing scam operators use these methods to try to solicit personal information from consumers, by posing as AnnualCreditReport.com representatives. Some go so far as to build websites that, to all outward appearances, mirror the official site.

People who receive emails with links to free credit reporting services should not click through; they are almost always diverted to a sales site, or one set up to look like an official site but designed to steal personal information.

How to Use AnnualCreditReport.com to Obtain a 3 in 1 Credit Report

The authorized credit report ordering agency recommends that consumers type the web address directly into the browser to avoid being transferred to a scam site.

The order processing website is a secure environment. Consumers are required to input personal information such as their social security number, address, phone number, etc. Never submit this information in an email, over the phone, or on any website other than AnnualCreditReport.com.

Alternately, consumers can call 1-877-322-8228 to order their report by phone, or download the Annual Credit Report Request Form from the FTC website, fill out and mail to:

Tip on Ordering All Three Credit Reports

It is important to check credit reports at least once per year. Many people are unaware that they can order their three free credit reports separately. This means that consumers could receive a report every four months, allowing them to keep a closer eye on their financial health.

AnnualCreditReport.com allows consumers to process each order individually, or all three together. Use this service rather than applying to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion directly.

Canadians can visit Free Credit Report Services to find information on accessing their free annual credit reports from Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada.
